What a headache!

Blackheath were away at Holcombe on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon. The team were in good spirits and after a solid team talk from captain Maddy, we were ready to work as a team and score some goals!

We started off strong, communicating well and our work rate was faultless. Despite being under pressure, we coped well with this and were able to pass the ball with composure at the back and up the pitch.

Holcombe took their scoring opportunity on the break which left us 1-0 down within the first 15 minutes of the first half. However, Blackheath were determined to fight back and with a cracking pass from Laura in the middle of the pitch to our forward line, Emily ran onto the ball into space and hit the back backboard. The score line was levelled.

Despite Blackheath’s positive play and opportunities at goal, at half time the score line was 2-1 to Holcombe. After some wise words from our captain and vice captain, we were pumped and ready to turn the score line around the reflect our performance.

Shortly into the second half, Blackheath were under pressure with Holcombe penetrating the D multiple times, unable to find a way out. A Holcombe player took a shot at goal, the ball deflected from another Holcombe stick onto Marnie’s head and into the goal. Despite contesting dangerous play to the umpire, the goal still stood. We were 3-1 down.

Yet again, with our determined fighting spirit, we continued to battle and push forward to attack with some brilliant quick passes between all lines of the team to build up play. Blackheath were putting Holcombe under pressure in the D forcing a player to the goal line, with the ball hitting their foot, leading to a P flick in their favour. Marnie stepped up to the P spot aiming to redeem her previous mishap of heading the ball into the goal. She scored and made the score line 3-2.

Holcombe broke away, putting us under pressure in defence leaving Sarah and Marnie against 2 Holcombe players. Unfortunately they found the back of the net, leaving the score at 4-2. As the pattern of the match continues, Blackheath fought back with some good transfers around the back and through midfield creating opportunists at goal. After some open play, shots at goal and responding the rebounds from the keeper, Emma tucked the ball away into Holcombe’s goal. 4-3 to Holcombe.

With 2 minutes before the end of the match, Blackheath were in with a chance of equalising with a penalty corner….however, play broke down and captain Maddy took a painful stick to her head. First aid was administered by our calm and collected vice captain Marianna and Maddy was helped off of the pitch and taken to hospital.

The final score was an unfortunate 4-3 loss. MOM was awarded to Emily again this week after scoring a great goal! The winner of DOD this week was Marnie for headering the ball into our goal ?
A game break next week, then we go again girls ??
